			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The International Powered Access Federation or IPAF for short is a body that over the last twenty five years has strived to promote safe working procedures for powered access machinery workers. It has attempted to pursue these goals by producing training schedules for these workers so they have knowledge of safety issues and how to implement safe working practices. Formed in 1983 IPAF has worked towards these objectives as a non-profit organisation producing training guidelines and setting the standard in terms of safety procedures in the world of powered access.<br />
Through a large network of affiliated training centres IPAF has been able to deliver its message worldwide; at all times trainers are strictly regulated to ensure they adhere to IPAF recommendations and regulations. Once training has been completed an operative is given a Powered Access License meaning that they are safe to work on all manner of powered access machinery such as scissor lifts and cherry pickers. In recent years the Work at Height Regulations (2005) introduced by the British government has meant that in this country at least, the work of IPAF has been enhanced by statutory regulations to improve worker safety.<br />
These Work at Height Regulations apply to anyone who works somewhere where there is a risk of falling and injury. The reason they were created was to prevent accidental deaths whilst working at height. In terms of responsibility, a business owner, a self employed worker and even site managers are legally responsible for ensuring the safety of those working at height. Part of this responsibility is to ensure that all work is correctly planned taking into account the effects of weather; that all equipment is safe to use and properly maintained and any risks such as fragile surfaces and falling objects are controlled effectively.<br />
IPAF comes under the responsibilities defined by regulations as the manger or supervisor must ensure that all workers on the machinery have had adequate training to be deemed as competent. This applies not only to working methods, but the procedures of assembly and disassembly as well as the maintenance of machinery. In addition, those who are deemed competent must train any workers on how to avoid falling and how to fall correctly so any effects of a fall will be limited.<br />
One of the safety initiatives that has been produced by IPAF to complement the government legislation has been the &#8220;clunk-click&#8221; campaign. Fundamentally this initiative works towards the situation where anyone who is working at height is always wearing a full body safety harness to ensure that any falls do not result in serious injury. This harness is always in contact with a secure anchor point meaning that even if a worker slips and cannot place his hands on a point, the harness will take their weight and prevent the fall.<br />
IPAF, having been in existence for so long is regarded to be the most authoritative resource on all matters pertaining to powered access machinery safety. As such, the government uses the body as an advisor when drafting legislation on safety issues. By working in accordance with not only the British government but governments worldwide has meant that IPAF training courses can be deemed as an all encompassing approach, taking into account regulations from a large number of legislative bodies. Despite this, the constant upheaval of legally defined safety regulations means that training courses are updated regularly to adapt to changes to legislation.<br />
Thanks to its global approach and conscientious working methods the training offered by IPAF regulated centres means that safety for those working at height is now better than it has been in the past. That said, the work of this body is never fully completed, as technological developments and regulations come into effect, IPAF will continue to strive towards making the world of working at height safer.<br />

<p><strong>How many nurses do you know who step outside for a cigarette during their break, </strong>or consume loads of junk food or caffeine at every chance they get? A few, you might say. You may even be one of those nurses yourself. Now, how many nurses do you know who take time out to stretch, quietly meditate, or do deep breathing exercises on their break? Probably none. Doesn’t really seem conducive to work, appropriate, or simply practical, you might add.</p>
<p>Well, more and more working nurses (both shift workers and non) are finding there is a need to engage in some form of mind-body practice in the workplace. Calming the mind and rejuvenating the body is a highly effective practice, which can enhance the work experience and may prevent burnout in the long run. After all, when work stress takes its toll on the mental self, it begins to undoubtedly affect the physical body as well. Notice how you breathe more shallowly when you are anxious versus when you are relaxed. How about long-term affects of stress, leading to more serious disabilities? Did you know that multiple clinical studies have shown a correlation between anxiety, depression, and back pain? So, why does our body respond in this way and how can we engage in more positive and effective practices?</p>
<p>In order to adapt to increasingly stressful working environments, some of us naturally overeat, eat the wrong things, drink loads of coffee, or internalize stress by holding our breath or sitting with a poor posture. These habits are all used to cope or simply get through our work shift. While binging on junk food may be one of the more obvious signs, other more subtle forms include neglecting our most basic needs: bathroom breaks, hydration, and most importantly, rest! However, as humans, what we often fail to understand about ourselves is that the “reset button,” which helps us feel balanced and whole again, is already programmed within us without the need to reach for things outside of our bodies.</p>
<p>As difficult as it may seem, it is possible to tap into that nurturing, healing part within us, even for small fractions of time, in order to maintain wellness. As working nurses, it is our duty to be good to ourselves first, so we can in turn give our patients the best care in a mindful and compassionate manner. This is where yoga comes in.</p>
<p>Yoga, derived from the word “yoke” meaning to bring together in union, helps us achieve harmony between the mind, body, and spirit. It also creates a beautiful balance between the opposite forces of strength and flexibility, and control and surrender. So, you say, what does this have to do with my job? For the working nurse, the regular practice of yoga not only gives us tools to cope with stress and fatigue, but also helps us gain strength, clarity, focus, and internal peace. This means working from a more open and compassionate place rather than a hostile and disenchanted spirit.</p>
<p><strong>You may be asking yourself, how can I ever practice yoga when call lights are beeping, doctors are calling on the phone, and families and patients are restless for answers?</strong> The good news is that practicing yoga does not have to be anything formal or rigorous, or for the “spiritually enlightened.” Yoga is so simple and universally applicable that it only requires you to be present and willing to try. Yoga practice can be anything from a one-minute meditation to a full 90-minute physical workout. There are three simple ways to practice yoga at the workplace: 1) Meditation, 2) Deep breathing exercises, and 3) Stretching postures. Mindful meditation requires that you mentally tune out, even for as little as one minute, in order to refocus and draw inner peace. Find a quiet corner or room, even the bathroom if you have to, and take a few moments as you close your eyes and shift all of your focus inward.</p>
<p>Every time you feel your thoughts are racing, gently bring them back to the present moment. If you find that difficult to do, try listening to the sound of your inhale and exhale. Now picture every inhale as fresh new positive energy in the form of a gentle light, and exhale that energy back as if you are sending it out to your patients, your coworkers, your family, and even beyond, to the universe. Deep breathing (pranayama) involves various techniques to invigorate and re-circulate the blood between your lungs, heart, and brain. It helps clarify and increase mental alertness. Begin by inhaling from the diaphragm, meaning draw breath deep from the abdomen. Count for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 7 and exhale for 5 seconds. It is not required to close your eyes for deep breathing, but some people find it more helpful. The beauty of deep breathing is that it can be done anywhere, even while charting or sitting in front of the computer. Try doing this while talking to your patient or discussing a case with a physician. Soon you will find yourself responding much more calmly to a normally stressful situation.</p>
<p>Yoga stretching not only increases flexibility, but promotes muscle strength and prevents injuries. A sun salutation is a sequence of deep stretches, which correspond to deep inhalations and prolonged exhalations. To do a sun salutation: Stand upright, shoulders relaxed, feet together, and arms at your side. Begin by inhaling and sweeping your arms up and overhead, then exhale as your arms sweep back down to your sides. Continue exhaling as you bend from the hips, keeping your legs straight and fold forward with a straight back until your hands either reach the floor or rest on your shins. Let your head and neck hang. Next, inhale as you look halfway up and straighten your spine. Then, exhale by folding forward and letting your head and neck relax again. Inhale once more as you come straight up with a flat back, bringing your arms overhead and exhale bringing the arms back down to your sides, completing the sequence.</p>
<p>This is one of the most invigorating yoga sequences that does not require having to get down on the ground. By doing this sequence, fresh blood circulates to the brain, nerves and muscles are stimulated and the body is rejuvenated. Practice the sun salutation every couple hours if possible, doing a series of five sequences each time.</p>
<p>If your hospital unit or workplace recognizes holistic practices such as yoga, then it is worthwhile to consider organizing regular on-site yoga classes for your unit or team. Large corporate companies have begun incorporating yoga into their workplace as a means of employee wellness and retention. Shouldn’t the nursing profession be leaders in this movement? Perhaps by keeping our own workforce healthy with these preventive practices, we too can work more effectively, be more compassionate, (not only with our patients but with ourselves), and finally embark on a healthy and fulfilling career path.<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I work in a delightful complex. We have a small, efficient café in the middle of our office park run by a lady who has memorised the Christian name of every customer. I can’t tell you how powerful this is. I don’t care if the coffee is a bit ‘burnt’, or the sushi a bit dry. Nothing is more uplifting than the warm personal greeting she gives me when I drop by.</p>
<p>I make a point of not eating at my desk and getting out of the office for a 30 minute lunch break. These breaks are usually at our café. Inevitably I am privy to many conversations &#8211; the most common is a job interview.</p>
<p>I probably overhear a job interview once a week… and they make me cringe. I am almost tempted to breeze on over and say, “Excuse me, but I’m an expert in this area and the way you are doing this interview is going to tell you diddly squat about this person’s ability to perform successfully, here’s my card, please call me for some help.” It’s a temping action, but manners always prevail – so far!</p>
<p>What is it about cafes and job interviews?</p>
<p>Is it the notion of relaxing the applicant in the hope of gaining more predictive information? Let me tell you, a general chit chat over a cup of coffee is the poorest predictor of future job performance.</p>
<p>At best it’s going to cost you for the coffee and an hour of wasted time. At worst, if you hire that person,  you are probably going to find that very pleasant, polite, well presented individual you interviewed 6 months ago at the cafe is totally different today – most likely one you’d like to throw a cup of coffee over!!</p>
<p>Maybe its privacy – “Let’s get out of the office to some place quiet for a chat.” There’s nothing private about a café, I know, because I’ve sat at the next table and heard many an individual bare their soul.</p>
<p>In every case the interview questions we horrid &#8211; “So tell me about where you’d like to be in 5 years,” or, “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” The only information you’ll get from these questions are opinions.</p>
<p>It’s easy for applicants to give you opinions at an interview. An effective interview seeks to get concrete examples of past behaviour (as it relates to the position) because past behaviour reflects future behaviour.</p>
<p>Another common café observation &#8211; the hiring manager is doing all the talking and the applicant all the coffee drinking. Remember the 80/20 rule, when interviewing job applicants, listen 80% and talk 20% of the time.</p>
<p>The informal one-on-one café interview setting is a classic example of the unstructured interview &#8211; the worst kind of hiring tool. An unstructured interview leads to bias, snap judgements based on one’s emotional evaluations – “I like this person, they seem very nice, articulate, well presented; they would be perfect for the job.”</p>
<p>Remember, when conducting a job interview, this is the absolute best light you are going to see this person in. It’s easy to be fooled by first appearances. When it comes to an unstructured interview we tend to “rush judge” people. Most managers make up their minds to hire, or not to hire, within the first five minutes.</p>
<p>The best and most valid interviews are conducted in a private setting, with two (or more) interviewers who present the same set of behavioural questions to each candidate. Each question represents a core competency of the job.</p>
<p>Here’s an example: A key competency could be customer service – The question – “Can you please give me an example of the actions you took in a previous job when you were confronted with an abusive customer?”</p>
<p>Most jobs have about 6 to 8 core competencies, so a question for each one will do a good job and take about an hour to get through; I believe the limit for a good interview.</p>
<p>Here’s another tip. Immediately after the interview discuss and rate each of the competencies in relation to the candidate’s answers. This will help you recall the most suitable candidate(s) if you are interviewing several people over a few days.</p>
<p>There are numerous other pitfalls I’ve heard eavesdropping on café interviews, but suffice to say don’t do them – these unstructured interviews are not only the poorest predictor of work performance, but the most expensive (cost of your time) of any tool in the selection process. No wonder employment lawyers are making a nice living and we have an overly worked employment advocacy service!</p>
